Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai staged a unique agitation in Coimbatore on Friday when he flogged himself condemning the ruling DMK and the state police over the handling of the case of sexual assault on a Chennai college student on Christmas eve.

On Thursday, the BJP leader had said he would fast for 48 days and wouldn't wear footwear until the DMK was removed from power in Tamil Nadu.

In a novel protest to seek justice for the sexual assault victim of the prestigious Anna University in Chennai and to highlight women's security, BJP state president K Annamalai flogged himself in front of his residence in Coimbatore.

The BJP leader alleged that the accused committed the crime emboldened by his affiliation to the ruling party. The DMK, however, has said that the accused in the varsity student sexual assault case was not even a primary member of the DMK.

Annamalai criticised the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led government, alleging an increase in crimes against women, ANI reported. He told reporters that two unidentified persons entered the campus and assaulted the student.
