A guard at a California prison was attacked by an inmate Thursday evening in what officials are investigating as an attempted homicide. The attack happened around 6:25 p.m. at Mule Creek State Prison in Amador County.

Guard was escorting the convicted murderer back to his cell when the inmate turned on him, prison officials said.

After being cleared by the hospital, the suspect, 22-year-old Evan Gault, was arrested and transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility on the following charges: Criminal Attempt to Commit 2nd Degree Murder Menacing with a Real/Simulated Weapon Violation of a Protection Order Possession of a Schedule I/II Controlled Substance Possession of Drug Paraphernalia The incident remains under investigation.
