Justin Welby said he was stepping down “in sorrow.” He faced mounting calls to resign after an investigation found he failed to promptly report serial physical and sexual abuse by a volunteer at Christian summer camps.

Welby said he became aware of the claims in 2013, a few months after he became the archbishop — the most senior cleric in the Church of England and the spiritual leader to 85 million Anglicans worldwide.
